If you get caught carrying a knife without good reason YOU WILL be arrested.

You will have to explain to the police why you are carrying it and if you cannot provide a good enough reason, you will be prosecuted. The maximum sentence for carrying a knife is four years in prison.
Northumbria is a safe area and doesn't have the knife crime problems which are often reported on the news in other places in the UK.

Powers of search and arrest


A police constable (PC) can arrest you without a warrant and detain you for a period of time reasonably required to permit a search to be carried out. A PC can go into schools and search premises and anyone suspected of carrying a weapon.

Possible consequences of carrying a knife:

•  You have a false sense of security

•  You could kill someone

•  You could injure someone

•  You attract trouble and get stabbed yourself

•  You get arrested for carrying a knife

•  You end up with a criminal record
