When you watch police television programmes do you ever think: ”Are the police officers speaking a different language?"

The police are known for having and using a list of abbreviations so officers can quickly communicate with each other, although they will avoid using abbreviations or jargon when dealing directly with the public to ensure people fully understand what they are talking about.

Some of the more common police abbreviations are:


ABA - Acceptable Behaviour Agreement

ABH - Actual Bodily Harm

ACC - Assistant Chief Constable

ACPO - Association of Chief Police Officers

ANPR - Automatic Number Plate Recognition

ARV - Armed Response Vehicle
