Formed in 1974, Northumbria Police covers an area of more than 2,000 square miles between the Scottish border, County Durham and Cumbria.

Around 1.5 million people live in this area
The force has around 3816 police officers, 1446 police staff, 279 Special Constables and 409 Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), who work together to prevent, detect and reduce crime in Northumbria.

The force is split into three areas which we call Area Commands and these are Northern (Northumberland and North Tyneside), Central (Newcastle and Gateshead) and Southern (Sunderland and South Tyneside).

The area commands are supported by 12 specialist departments based around the force area which together provide a frontline service to prevent, detect and reduce crime in the Northumbria area.

Chief Constable Steve Ashman leads the force together with his Chief Officer Team.
